What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding involves applying a resin material to your tooth to improve or restore your smile. The material looks just like your natural teeth and is hardened with the use of a special bonding material to make sure it sticks.

It’s a cosmetic procedure that not only helps you get a perfect smile but offers other benefits as well, including improved teeth functionality.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Bonding is one of the least expensive and easiest cosmetic dentistry procedures. The composite resin can be polished and shaped to look just like your natural teeth.

In some cases, bonding may also be used to remove gaps between two teeth to make it easier to bite and chew food. Plus, it can also be used in place of fillings as it’s harmless and looks just like your natural teeth.

Dental bonding can also prevent decay and damage to the teeth by protecting the tooth’s root if it gets exposed due to gum recession.

You should consider dental bonding if you have:

  • Discolored tooth or teeth
  • Chipped tooth or teeth
  • Gaps between your teeth

The Procedure

Dental bonding is a non-invasive, pain-free procedure that can be completed in a single visit to the dentist. We’ll explain the procedure to you in detail and make sure you’re a good candidate before we begin. We want you to have all the information before you make a decision about your oral health.

Almost anyone can get dental bonding; however, in some cases, another dental procedures, such as tooth whitening, may be more beneficial. We’ll review your overall oral health and make sure dental bonding is the right treatment for you before we move ahead with the process.

We’ll also answer all your questions and select a composite resin color based on your natural teeth so that it looks just like your original teeth.

Next, we’ll apply the bonding material after roughening the surface a little bit. This won’t hurt or harm your tooth at all. Once ready, we’ll apply the resin, mold it to give it the desired shape, and harden it with the help of a laser or ultraviolet light.

The material may take a few minutes to harden. Once positioned properly, we’ll trim and polish it to give it the right look and color. The whole process only takes about 40 minutes. However, we typically only work on one tooth in a single sitting and may ask you to come back if you need to get more teeth done.

In addition, its best to follow a good dental hygiene routine, which includes brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day. Moreover, we may ask you to not eat or bite too hard for the first two days to ensure there’s no damage to the bonding.
